The idea of this day first came in place in 2011 by G-52C Public Markets Group Africa, and to date, the day is observed on 21st of December every year. People in the public markets are sensitised of their rights which include; right to be heard, right to democratic leadership, expression, choice of quality products among others as well as using the commemoration to bridge the gap between manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and consumers. The people in the public markets get an opportunity to associate directly with producers of the products they sell, and producers also get to know the market
demands and needs of their customers.
This day is an opportunity for manufacturers to sell inventories remaining in the stores towards the end of the year and likewise consumers happen to purchase goods and services on goodwill.
Public market vendors and consumers have a chance to meet manufacturers which comes with improvements in the quality of products and discount offers to the product users. The governments use the day to embrace the role of public markets in the economic growth and development.
